Welcome

to the strolling club, a web-interspace and future webring, where navigating the web takes the form of a promenade rather than the usual instantaneous commute. This project was started by Lars in collaboration with Rebecca Herold for the masters thesis of Francesco Scheffczyk and developed further at Burg Halle.

While strolling you are able to leave and read notes, chat with people close to you spatially (5 grids away) and visit the linked websites. Please stay friendly and avoid any forms of bigotry or hateful speech, or else you'll get banned.

For this presentation websites found here are just a collection of inspiration for this site or other sites that act in a similar way, I found later. In future this will act like a webring, where you can place your personal website/blog on the map via the following instructions.

Apply

The ringpark works in a very similar way to webrings. You can apply by writing a mail to apply@strolling.club. You will only need a personal website/blog (tumblr is also fine) to join the webring. After you're accepted you will need to add a code snippet to your website, consisting of a 3x3 grid of emojis linking to the park, which will also serve as your home on the map. The park server will check once a day if this link is provided and place your site on the map.

Data to be provided

Coords

Where on the map do you want to be placed? You will get a 3x3 grid centered at the coordinates provided. If somebody else already occupies the same coords, you will be placed somewhere close by. These coordinates are stored in the data attributes of the backlink as data-strolling-club-x and data-strolling-club-y.

Backlink

Provide a link back to the park. It has a `?query=`parameter with your url. This helps placing visitors in the park, starting from your website's coords. This backlink is the

Map

of your space. It is a 3x3 grid of emojis. This "map" will be automatically put into the park at the provided coords.

RSS

Feed link in the head of your HTML. This is optional. If you provide a link element with an rss feed, it will be displayed when somebody enters your "home" map, so visitors can see what you're website is about, before visiting it.
